Night Diving in Gili Trawangan – The Reef After Dark

When the sun goes down, the reef comes alive in a completely different way. Hunting lionfish and morays, sleeping parrotfish, prowling crabs and shrimp, and — if you're lucky — the sparkle of bioluminescence in your torch beam. Our guided night dives in Gili Trawangan are open to all certified divers, with torches provided and a sunset boat ride thrown in. Same reef, whole new world.

Your evening runs from 6:00 pm to around 7:30 pm, depending on sunset time.

How Does a Night Dive Look?

Divers relaxing on the boat at sunset on the way to the night dive

6:00 pm Set Sail at Sunset

Start your evening on the water as the sun sets over the Gili Islands. Our dive boat will take you out from Gili Trawangan to the dive site selected for that evening — the exact site depends on conditions, currents and the experience level of the divers joining us. On the way you'll have time to prepare your equipment, go through the night-dive briefing and watch the last light disappear before entering the water.

Sunset Into the Dark

Torches on, we descend as the last light fades. Your guide will lead you over the reef in a small group, picking out hunting predators, sleeping fish tucked into the coral, and critters that only come out at night — and when you cover your torch and wave your hand, the water sparkles with bioluminescence.

7:30 pm Back on Board

After around 45 minutes underwater, we surface beneath the stars. Warm up, swap stories, and enjoy snacks and refreshments on the short ride home — you'll be back on Gili Trawangan with plenty of time left to grab dinner and relive the dive.

Your Dive Boat

Our 12-metre dive boat is spacious, comfortable, and fully equipped with all the necessary safety equipment to make every dive as safe as possible. It offers a smooth ride, space to gear up with ease, and a chill area to relax. On a night dive it doubles as the best sunset spot around — and the comfiest place to warm up afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is night diving scary?

Less than you think. Your torch lights a cosy bubble of reef, your guide knows every inch of the site, and the fish are mostly asleep. Most divers surface wondering why they waited so long to try it.

What will I see?

Hunting morays and lionfish, sleeping parrotfish in their mucus cocoons, crustaceans everywhere — and bioluminescent plankton when you cover your torch and wave your hand.

Do I need to be certified to join a night dive?

Yes — night dives are open to certified divers from any recognised agency, with an Open Water certification as the minimum. Not certified yet? Our Open Water course has you covered.

What equipment do I need to bring?

All necessary equipment is provided by us, torches included. Just come prepared with swimwear, a towel and a sense of adventure!

What requirements are needed before diving?

A medical questionnaire is typically required. If you answer "yes" to any medical history questions, a physician's approval may be necessary. Safety is paramount, and we ensure all divers are physically fit for the underwater experience.
